In Battlefield 2142 you can get four types of Awards. One of the categories is the Ribbon category. Every ribbon can only be obtained once. They are mostly for medium hard to reach achievements, tour of duty and similar things. In most cases, you get a ribbon before you get a medal that sometimes has similar requirements. The in one round requirement cannot be completed unless the Global requirement is fulfilled prior to the beginning of the current round.

Each ribbon gives you career points. These count towards your rank progression so you can get a new rank and a new unlock a bit faster.
